At my urban farm, I have strawberry plants that grow directly next to the sidewalk. The plants along the sidewalk are truly an example of Permaculture for two reasons. First because Permaculture values the use of edges (this is certainly an edge since they are next to asphalt) and second because the sidewalk and rocks in between the plants function as a furnace in the spring thereby heating the ground earlier and making for bigger berries earlier in the season. We had our first strawberry harvest on May 23rd and this image is from the second harvest on June 1st. Unbelievable this early in the season in New Hampshire!
